Trying to stay on track in Istanbul!

So as I write this I’m in Istanbul trying to get used to life working away from home again! I’m fortunate enough to get to travel with work every now and again and currently, Istanbul has become my home until May 28th.

I flew in yesterday evening (March 13th) after spending the last few days going completely off track while seeing Family and Friends before traveling. I spent most of today figuring out how to get to and from work while also wondering how to stay on track!

This brings me to this post! Today I went on the hunt for a supermarket to buy some things to help keep me on track! Luckily I found a number of Carrefour’s pretty close to the hotel. Carrefour is basically Dunnes Stores/Tesco/Supervalu and so far I’ve found it in France, Poland and now, Turkey!

I spent a good while walking around trying to suss things out and point things and here’s my haul!

  • Olive Oil
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Pears
  • Red Onion
  • Carrots
  • Salt/Pepper
  • Cheese
  • Chicken Slices
  • Beef

Important things I learned

  • Enerji – Kcal (Easy to see what that is! 🙂 )
  • Yağ – Fat
  • Doymuş yağ – Saturated Fats
  • karbonhidrat – Carbs (Another one not to difficult to translate thankfully!)
  • Şeker – Sugar
  • Protein – ….You guessed it! Protein

Other things I bought

  • Chopping Knife
  • Chopping board (I own about 5 now!)
  • Potato peeler (Doctors orders not to eat the skin off any fruit/veg out here, so this is a must have)
  • Spatula

There are a few other things I’ll need to pick up, but that’s all I could fit in the bag today!

Things I couldn’t find…
Wholewheat pasta… For the life of me I couldn’t see it.. I must have walked up and down that Aisle about 15 times but no joy. In the end I just got regular pasta.. From memory, it’s basically the same points. The big difference is that Wholewheat is on nocount (Filling & Healthy) but plain pasta is not..
Fruit and Veg… The selection wasn’t great. I’d usually fill my basket with Bell Peppers, Mushrooms, Scallions, Onions, Spinach, Root Veg, etc.. But here, All I could find was Carrots, Onions, Scallions and a few different types of peppers but mostly hot peppers. I’m sure I’ll find somewhere with a better selection.
Spray Oil!!… Doesn’t appear to exist here, That’s why I opted for Olive Oil!
Sauces for Stir Fry’s… I couldn’t see any sauces for stir fry’s, but this isn’t a major concern.. I’ll be able to work something out with the Olive Oil and some spices!

These were the bigger things that I struggled with in comparison to if I was at home! but at the same time, not a major issue, I’m sure I’ll find somewhere that will have stuff I couldn’t find; If not, It’s not the end of the world!

Based on this shop, I think Lunches will be Sandwiches and I’ll be making stir fry’s for dinner! I’ll probably have some fruit for breakfast or else get something in the work canteen.

So, Why do this?!… I think this post for me is to mostly make it real for me that I want to stay on track and actually loose while here! My Brother is getting Married in July so I want to shed a few lbs before then! I fully intend to explore and enjoy some of the cuisine out here as I have only heard amazing things, but I’m also fully aware that I need to just keep an eye on what I’m eating; If I don’t, I know for sure that I’ll grow in the wrong direction!

From time to time over the course of the next two and a half months I might post recipies of things I cook, or I might even show off some of the local cuisine I indulge in! Who Knows! Keep an eye on the website to see! Thanks!

PS… Here’s a photo of the hotel! Fairly cool ain’t it!
